3D Printing & Maker Camp! Bridgeport, Day 1…

Welcome to 3D Printing & Maker Camp! This is a camp unlike any you’ve been to before, a first-of-its kind, ambitious ADVENTURE… We’ll be reaching for the stars, doing a few more things than we’ve been told are possible, and building STEM skills that will serve us for a lifetime.

First you received your Engineering Notepad and pen. Take good notes, record your thoughts, and resources as we go!

We start with the free design software from Autodesk called TinkerCAD which -though powerful- runs in a browser window on any computer. You can even use it at home, so the learning can continue. That’s why it was so important to have mom or dad create an account for you… Your account will be storing all the designs you make in Camp!

After working through tutorials and learning the ropes, we’re on to our own designs right out of the gate! Custom designed projects are turned into .stl files we’ll use for 3D Printing. Then, we’re off to Thingiverse, to learn about the Economy of Ideas, how free sharing of information is changing the world we live in, and how each of us can play a part in shaping it!

Then we’re working with custom-designed WV Makes! models downloaded and printed from Thingiverse; we talk through the challenges and process of designing, printing, and eventually uploading these models, for downloading and printing by users. The icosahedron model in question is engineered to join standard toothpicks into geometric forms. Working with them we navigate a 3D Design environment, in the real world!

Your first custom project: a keychain designed from scratch is printed, and ready to take home… you can take home a handful of pre-printed icosahedron models and some toothpicks too!

At the end of the day, you get your toolboxes, place your name-tags from the day on the box, we’ll be working from it for the rest of the week. Here’s what’s inside:

  • Screwdriver set
  • an “I Can Solder” badge kit
  • a Line-Following-Robot electronic assembly kit

*Put your engineering notebook and pen here too, and leave your toolbox here; we’ll be working from your toolbox for the rest of the week!
